Maher and Councillor Brian Murphy, Co-Chairs of the Ordinance Committee, for a meeting held on November 13, 2002 for the purpose of considering a proposed amendment to the Truck Zoning Petition Ordinance, Section 6.96, of the Zoning Ordinance.

2. A communication was received from D. Margaret Drury, City Clerk, transmitting a report from Councillor Brian Murphy, Chair of the Public Facilities, Art and Celebrations Committee, for a meeting held on December 11, 2002 to continue the discussion of the impact of state budget cuts on city arts programs, the status of the report on developing a Cambridge Art survey and possible tools for the city to develop artists’ living and work space.

3. A communication was received from D. Margaret Drury, City Clerk, transmitting a report from Councillor Marjorie Decker, Chair of the Civic Unity Committee, for a meeting held on December 18, 2002 for the purpose of discussing enforcement of panhandling, public drinking and drug activity in and around Central, Harvard and Porter Squares.

WHEREAS: The City Council recently passed a Climate Protection Plan with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by twenty percent below recorded 1990 levels; and
WHEREAS: The success of the Climate Protection Plan is dependent upon the efforts of the City, along with its university neighbors, businesses, and residents; and
WHEREAS: Energy conservation is one of the actions that the Plan takes to meet the goal of reducing GHG emissions; and
WHEREAS: Harvard University is realizing significant energy savings by equipping their vending machines with a new energy-saving device that activates the machine through motion detection (see attached article); now therefore be it
ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to report back to the City Council on equipping all vending machines in City buildings and at City facilities with this energy-saving device, looking toward meeting the goals of the Climate Protection Plan.
