9:00am-1:00pm Community Bike Ride: Trails to Rails (meet at Main Library/Joan Lorenz Park, 449 Broadway)
Join the Cambridge Bicycle Committee on a 14-mile ride exploring the history of multi-use trails and trains in Cambridge. We will begin gathering outside the Cambridge Public Library Main Branch at 9:00am and depart promptly at 9:30am. The ride will be escorted by the Cambridge Police Department’s Bike Patrol and take about two hours, including a midway break. The ride will go at a relaxed pace, but we ask that young children ride tandem with an adult (trailers, bike seats, tag-alongs, etc.). Bike mechanics will be on hand before the ride to make quick safety checks. The mechanics will be making minor adjustments, like tire pressure, and emergency repairs only. Please make sure your bike is in reasonable working order before the ride. If you are interested in learning more about how to repair your own bike, sign up for the May 3 Bicycle Maintenance Clinic. The ride will be cancelled in the case of heavy rain. There is no registration or charge for the tour – just show up and enjoy!

“The City is considering changes that would require large buildings to lower their emissions over time. Join staff from the Community Development Department and several City Councillors” [Patricia Nolan and Quinton Zondervan only - apparently only those councillors who are zealously supportive of the proposed amendments as now written] “for a webinar to learn about proposed changes to the Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO). If you can’t attend virtually, we will stream the webinar on the second floor of 344 Broadway. There are a limited number of seats available.” [About BEUDO – In Cambridge, more than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings. Since 2014, the Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO) has required buildings over a certain size to report energy use to the City. The purpose of this hearing is to gather testimony, information and public input concerning the property tax rate classification. Under the laws of the Commonwealth, the City has the option of taxing residential and commercial/industrial property at different tax rates. At this public meeting, the City Council will review tax rates/classifications proposed by the City Manager and the Board of Assessors. The votes taken will result in property tax rates that reflect the city’s property tax levy for Fiscal Year 2023, including the granting of the residential exemption.

The so-called “H.E.A.R.T. proposal” (Holistic Emergency Alternative Response Team) was first introduced in May 2021 by activists who were openly hostile to police and who repeatedly referred to police as “slave-catchers”. Everyone, including Cambridge Police, agree with the idea that not all emergency calls need to be or should be handled by uniformed and armed police. The City came back with a more rational proposal with the creation of a new Community Safety Department along with a system called CARP (Cambridge Alternative Response Program) that would integrate alternate emergency response with Emergency Communications - in contrast with the activist proposal that would have created a completely separate system divorced from City government (except for the funding). The availability of federal ARPA money with minimal strings attached led to the activists seeking an alternate way to justify their existence. Since then I have heard rumors that the people behind the HEART proposal had an inside track to get a contract under the new department - something some of us consider highly problematic. I hope this is just an unfounded rumor. Some city councillors, Mr. Zondervan in particular, continue in their effort to assume an executive role by asserting that the Community Safety Department will be integrated with HEART even though there is no such reference in the FY2023 Budget. It continues to astound me that Mayor Siddiqui chose to appoint Councillor Zondervan as Chair of the Public Safety Committee. - Robert Winters
