Sat, May 6

10:30am-Noon   Jane Jacobs Walk

Meet in front of the Out of Town News kiosk, on the "island" in Harvard Square just steps from the T station.

Our 9th annual Jane's walk will continue last year's exploration of Cambridge's original settlement, radiating from the site of the initial village of Newtowne in what is now Harvard Square. This walking conversation will begin at the Harvard Square Subway Kiosk, built in 1928, now occupied by Out of Town News, diagonally across from the Abbot Building – home to Curious George – and its abutters, all currently the subject of controversy over their future form and use. We will take a look at the dense layers of history that have endured the centuries, not yet victims of what Jane Jacobs called "cataclysmic money." This closely built, low-rise area – a lively mix of commercial, residential, and Harvard University's institutional structures – has changed incrementally over time and managed to retain much of its historic character. As we proceed east down Mass. Ave. and wind through narrow side streets towards the Charles River, we will look at many gems such as the Clover Restaurant's uncovered historic tiles, the 1760 Rev. East Apthorp house, St. Paul's Church, private dormitories and finals clubs as well as traces of the Irish immigrant neighborhood that was displaced by Harvard's River Houses in the early 20th century. Walkers will ponder how best old buildings can survive and remain viable.

As always, we welcome the observations of all participants. Charles Sullivan, executive director of the Cambridge Historical Commission, will lead the walk. He and Susan Maycock, survey director of the Cambridge Historical Commission, are the authors of Building Old Cambridge: Architecture and Development. Published in fall 2016 by The MIT Press, this beautifully written book, profusely illustrated with historic images, is now available in your local bookstores.

Lunch to follow at Grendel's Den, 89 Winthrop Street, whose entrance abuts Winthrop Park, where those who wish may continue conversation and purchase lunch. Grendel's has been independently owned and run by the same family since 1961.

A light supper will be provided. MIT representatives have been talking with lots of people about the Volpe site, including regular meetings with the City's Volpe Working Group. Together, MIT and Cambridge residents have the opportunity to shape a new mixed-use environment with housing, open space, active ground floor uses, and commercial space on a parcel that was previously inaccessible. At community meetings, MIT representatives have been hearing valuable input related to site connectivity, the placement and configuration of open space, the nature of the housing, types of retail, and the enhancement of existing features such as the Broad Canal and the 6th Street Walkway, among other topics. This feedback is extremely helpful to MIT as they prepare to file a zoning petition in June which will launch the formal public hearing process. Find additional project information at volpe.mit.edu.

The panels are currently:
Panel 1: (7:00pm) Devereux, Musgrave, Sutton, Siddiqui, Levy, Zondervan, Santos

Panel 3: (8:25pm) McGovern, Okamoto, Toomey, Sivongxay, Mallon, Pillai

Alice Wolf will moderate and Susana Segat will keep time. CCTV will record and rebrodcast the proceedings. Each panel will have two rounds. In the first round each candidate will be asked to present and justify (in three minutes) a specific proposal he or she expects to bring to the City Council, addressing an issue in one of the topic areas listed below. We seek to learn both what the candidates' top priorities are, and whether they have a practical, actionable program for addressing them. If time permits we may ask a follow-up question. In the second round each candidate will have two minutes to tell the audience what he or she brings to the City Council in terms of abilities, knowledge, priorities, and experience with consensus-building. The auditorium is on the second floor of University Hall. You get to it by way of the staircase in the south lobby. Lesley University has asked that there not be any extraneous "campaigning", such as carrying signs, inside of University Hall.

TOPIC AREAS (CHOSEN AND REFINED BY NEIGHBORHOOD POLL)
* Accountability: What mechanisms would you propose to hold city officials and developers accountable for their promises around development projects in the city? How should the city council insure that developers deliver what they promise, and that city ordinances are enforced?
* Housing: What are the key issues with housing in Cambridge and how do you propose to address them?
* Climate change: What specific actions would you take to ensure that the City has resilience in light of environmental changes and/or catastrophic weather?
* Social safety net: What are the holes in our safety net and what would you propose to mend them?
* Congestion: Specifically what would you do to improve the balance between the competing needs of drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and public transit users?
