Sun, Mar 30
6:30pm-7:00pm Host Marilyn Wellons is joined by Frank DeMasi on "The Cambridge Environment" on CCTV (Cable channel 9) to discuss the Urban Ring Phase 2 and Grand Junction rail line and bridge. Mr. DeMasi is a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization's Regional Transportation Advisory Council (RTAC) and former Chair of the RTAC Freight Committee. The show's focus on transportation and the environment moves from the Beacon freight yards in Allston, across the Charles River on the Grand Junction rail line and bridge, to Cambridge and points north. The Grand Junction bridge is the only north-south rail connection east of Worcester. Freight and commuter rail use it now. Harvard, MIT, and Boston University want to use it for a bus highway, the Urban Ring Phase 2. Logistics expert Frank DeMasi and Marilyn Wellons consider these plans' effect on the state's budget, economy, and environment. The show is rebroadcast at 1:30am on Mon, March 31.
Note: I watched Part 1 the program on Mar 16 and found Frank DeMasi to be a remarkably well-informed and interesting guest. Even if (like me) you have some reservations about the usual host of this program (Mr. LaTremouille), the discussion between Marilyn Wellons and Frank DeMasi will most likely again be fact-filled and interesting. - RW

10:15am Trails, Sails, Rails and Wheels - Cambridge Transportation History (11-mile bike ride starts at Cambridge Common)
Join the Cambridge Bicycle Committee for a leisurely ride through the streets of Cambridge as part of the city's annual GoGreen Month activities. The theme of this spring's bike tour is transportation history in Cambridge from pre-colonial times to the present (and maybe a glimpse of the future).
We start at the Cambridge Common for a ride just over 11 miles long. The ride should take a little more than two hours, and will include several intermediate stops for short theme-related talks. We'll end up at the brand new North Point park for a snack. After that, we'll lead those interested back to the starting point at the Cambridge Common (another 2.5 miles).
The ride will be escorted by the Cambridge Police Department's Bike Patrol.
Please arrive at the start by 10:15am for a 10:30am departure.
Rain date May 18, same time. Announcements regarding rain will be sent to the ride email list and posted at cambridgebikes.org.
There is no registration or charge for the tour -- just show up and have fun.

Join us for 14.5 scenic miles by bike, as we circle our bow-tie shaped city's eastern perimeter, tie the knot in the center of Cambridge, then loop around the western border. We've reconfigured the usual bow-tie shaped route to coordinate with the celebration of the Minuteman Bikeway's induction into the national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame (see below). This year's ride will include a short rest break at the halfway point on Memorial Drive at Longfellow Park, followed by a stop at the Cambridge Minuteman gateway near the Alewife T station for the kickoff of the Minuteman celebration. This will be a gorgeous Autumn ride, at an easy pace on mostly level terrain. For those looking for a shorter ride, join up at the half-way stop at 11:30am at Longfellow Park. No rain date: Heavy rain cancels. Rain announcements will be posted here on the morning of the ride. Like all our tours, this ride is free of charge. Wear a bow tie, or come as you are! For more information, visit http://www.cambridgebikes.org Minuteman Bikeway Celebration: Rail-Trail Hall Of Fame The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy this year has named the extremely popular Minuteman Bikeway as the fifth inductee to the national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.
