Note: Last year's budget highlight was the dramatic 54% expansion of the Mayor's Office budget for "research assistants" for all the city councillors. There was no warning and no discussion during the budget hearings. It just appeared out of nowhere in the budget book. My guess is that this ill-founded program will be continued (again without any discussion) and the budget moved (permanently) to the City Council budget. [It's still in the Mayor's Office budget for FY08.]
Everyone should understand that these personal aides invariably do work to support the reelection campaigns of incumbent councillors - all at taxpayer expense. The current mayor is the root of this problem. All indications are that he added these "research assistants" in exchange for the votes he needed to be selected as mayor. This mayor also gave jobs to most of his political campaign. His staff includes his campaign treasurer (Bernard Hicks - $51,250 plus benefits = $61,968), his campaign manager (Gabriel Mondon - $51,250 plus benefits = $61,968), and one of his major supporters (John Clifford - $51,250 plus benefits = $61,968). That's a $185,904 public contribution to his campaign. Last year's budget for the personal aides for councillors was an additional $248,553.
In the FY08 budget, Hicks, Mondon, and Clifford will each cost us $52,275 in salary ($63,703 including benefits) - a total of $191,109. The personal aides have a budget of $256,135 in the FY08 budget. Their benefactor, Kenneth E. Reeves, will receive an annual salary of $99,552 ($116,211 including benefits).

All four of the candidates who qualified for the ballot in this race have been invited; as of this writing, Cambridge Councillor Anthony Galluccio, and Cambridge residents Timothy Flaherty and Jeff Ross have confirmed their participation (Chelsea Councillor Paul Nowicki has declined because of a conflict). With the short special election campaign season, there will be limited number of opportunities to see the candidates together. (The Democratic primary, which will almost certainly determine the outcome of this election, takes place on September 11.) This forum, the first since the ballot was finalized at the end of the filing period, can play an important role in shaping the remainder of this campaign!
The August 16 Forum will include a mix of prepared questions and questions from the floor, as well as some debate among the candidates. If you have a question that you would like to submit for consideration, please email it to the above address. The Forum is being generously co-sponsored by The Alewife and The Cambridge Chronicle; questions and comments may also be submitted through their respective blogs: www.thealewife.com and http://blogs.townonline.com/campolitics.
Following the conclusion of the Forum on August 16 (approximately 9pm), there will be a meeting of PDC-DFA members to consider a possible endorsement in this race, and also to finalize details about their upcoming forums for the Cambridge City Council and School Committee races. (PDS will be voting on endorsement at its upcoming regular meeting.)

About
Cambridge Carnival
Cambridge Carnival is a nonprofit organization and made up of a
community-based planning committee of all volunteers. The committee works
yearlong to plan and organize the annual festival which is now one of the
largest festivals in Cambridge. In 2007, Cambridge Carnival will celebrate
its 15th year!
Cambridge Carnival is a free colorful and festive celebration that is rooted in African and South American traditions. The rich rhythmic musicality and culture of the Caribbean can be seen as revelers masquerade through the streets in dazzling handmade costumes dancing to the beat of Carnival! Cambridge Carnival in Massachusetts is one of twenty-four North American Caribbean-style carnivals that combine wire-bending, costumes, masks, music, steel pan, street-parades, dancing, food and craft exhibits, to display the cultural diversity of the countries and Caribbean Islands.
Since its inception in 1992, Cambridge Carnival has grown from a small street fair to one of the most spectacular events in Cambridge and the Greater Boston area. This growth led to, in 2005, a change in venue from Central Square to its new home in Kendall Square.
