5:30-7:30pm Coming Around: The Urban Ring and the
Future of Boston Transit (Arco Forum, Kennedy School of Government,
Harvard University)
The Rappaport Institute for Greater
Boston is sponsoring a forum on the concept of the Urban Ring in Greater Boston.
The program will provide a complete overview of the concept, rationales for and
against, costs and benefits, and implementation options.
The proposed Urban Ring arcs through seven communities:
Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, and Brookline, where
population growth is more than double that of the region. Current transit travel
along the corridor is inefficient - people traveling to destinations along the
Urban Ring are often forced to ride into downtown on one line and back out on
another. This hub and spoke system, in addition to being inconvenient to riders,
places a great strain on the center of the system ? anyone who has been to the
Park Street station can attest to this. According to the MBTA, without the Urban
Ring, transit demand will push the system, especially the Green and Red lines,
beyond capacity.
Please join us for a lively discussion, multimedia
presentation, and question and answer session. Panelists include: State
Representative Jarrett Barrios, Peter Calcaterra and Dennis Dizoglio of the
MBTA, David Dixon of Goody, Clancy, and Associates, Richard Garver of the BRA,
Sarah Hamilton of MASCO, Jim Klocke of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce,
David Lee of Stull and Lee, Stephanie Pollack of the Conservation Law
Foundation, Suzanne Rasmussen of the City of Cambridge, Glen Tepke of the
Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, George Thrush of Northeastern, Jay
Wickersham of MEPA, and David Vickery of Spaulding & Slye. Alan Altshuler of
the Kennedy School of Government will serve as the moderator.
A background paper on the Urban Ring, written by
Anthony Flint of The Boston Globe, will be available at the event. For more
information, go to www.ksg.harvard.edu/rappaport/urbanring.htm

[Among other things, the amendments would prohibit smoking in all bars and
restaurants in Cambridge, something that is already true in Arlington, Belmont,
and Medford and which is now being considered by 14 communities in the Boston
Metropolitan Area. Pardon the editorializing but most of these communities are
waiting for Cambridge and Boston to act affirmatively on this before they follow
suit. If the Cambridge City Council fails to show any leadership on this, it
will be a significant setback for public health in workplaces and other public accommodations.
Now is the time to see whether some councillors' claims of "vision"
and "strong leadership" have any meaning at all.]

(Another CUE forum is scheduled for Wed, Dec. 4 at CRLS, in either the library

The goal is to have a discussion on two key issues raised by
the current school consolidation plan:
A) What would an
effective, consultative, inclusive process for gathering family input look
like?
B) What are the criteria we think should be used to help
define which of our schools (or parts thereof) need the most attention and help?
The idea is to see if through a facilitated dialogue we can
develop a message about these two questions that we as involved, engaged
citizens and parents want to convey to the School Department and School
Committee. If we can come to some overall agreement, even if not unanimous, then
we would communicate the ideas to the Superintendent, the School Committee, and
each school's administration.
