Department of Public Works (Best Western Homestead Inn - 220 Alewife Brook Parkway)
This fourth and final meeting will conclude the MWRA/City
hearings with a revised plan for the Alewife Brook Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)
Control/Cambridge Sewer Separation Project. Important issues are habitat protection,
waterways flooding and hydrology, detention areas, and mitigation.
This meeting consists mostly of staff of the project presenting
evaluations of potential impacts and mitigation measures to be taken to ensure a protected
public parkland and discussing the "Notice of Project Change" once again with
hearing participants. It is not clear whether public comment will be accepted at this
meeting. Written, e-mailed, or faxed responses will be accepted through mid-March and
possibly into April.
The Friends of Alewife (FAR) make the point that this is your
public parkland of the MDC and it will be a major spot for Cambridge and surrounding
municipalities to learn from an environmental wild on the T stop. It can also be a
wonderful place for rest, passive recreation and environmental protection. "You all
will be the future conservationists of this treasure, together with the MDC." [Note
- Among the various civic and advocacy groups that have sprung up in Cambridge over the
years, the Friends of Alewife (FAR) deserve a lot of credit for their positive outlook and
willingness to delve into some of the not-so-sexy subjects like sewerage. To an
"environment and infrastructure" guy like me, this is as good as it gets. -

Cambridge: 7:30pm, meet in the Cambridge Common, at the statue in the
center
The "rolling blackout", on the first day of Summer, is an
evening when people all over the US will be voluntarily cutting their electricity usage
down to the bare minimum, to send a message to the President that we want to conserve our
natural resources, not ravage them.
The ride will take us down Mass Ave, from Boston, into
Cambridge, and on down to Arlington. We will end up in a hilltop park in Arlington which
overlooks much of Cambridge and Boston. Bring picnic food, non-alcoholic drink, and
blankets if you like. Some light snacks will be provided, but the more the merrier. Also,
be prepared for quite a hill climb. (No one should feel ashamed if they decide to walk
it.) Other than the hill, it will be a slow, nonchallenging ride. So come with us, and
spend the evening relying on your own energy, not big oil! For more info check out the
website: http://home.mindspring.com/~turtlex/index.html.

Get to know some of the wild edible and medicinal plants of our
area. Many grow abundantly in our own back yards and city side walks. Learn how common,
abundant "weeds" stand ready to support us through the challenges of daily
living. Discover the world of tinctures and infusions. Learn to harvest wild plants safely
and with respect. Receiving food and healing directly from the Earth fosters a feeling of
connection with all life and a natural impulse to protect the earth.

6:30pm-8:30pm MBTA Proposed Urban Ring Public Meeting
(25 Carleton St., MIT's Building E-25, Room 11)
The MBTA will hold a public meeting on the Urban Ring, the T's
project to improve crosstown transit in Greater Boston. MBTA staff will report on the
findings of the Urban Ring study, including the alternative routes and plan for
implementation. Residents will be invited to ask questions and make comments.
The Urban Ring has the potential
to greatly improve transit service for people who live or work in Cambridge. It would link
the spokes of the current transit system by providing crosstown service running from
Columbia Point in Boston in the south to Logan Airport in the northeast, passing through
Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Everett, and Chelsea. Though many destinations in the
Urban Ring corridor are quite close together, the existing radial transit system often
does not provide direct connections. The Urban Ring would reduce unnecessary travel into
Downtown Boston and out again to reach destinations along the corridor.
The proposed Urban Ring will cross the Charles River into
Cambridgeport, cross Mass. Ave. east of Central Square, and connect with the Kendall
Square Red Line station and with the Lechmere Green Line station. It should be especially
useful for residents of Cambridgeport, Area IV, and East Cambridge.
The T has studied various options for serving the corridor. After
extensive community and technical input, a plan has been developed to phase in the
service, beginning with buses and converting to rail service over time. The T intends to
file an Environmental Notification Form (ENF) for the project at the end of July. This is
a major milestone in moving the Urban Ring forward.
For more information, call 617-349-4604. Language translation and
services for persons with hearing disabilities are available by phoning (617) 492-4996.
The meeting room is wheelchair accessible. Official notice at http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/special/urbanring791.html.
