4:00pm   Special City Council meeting on library zoning (City Hall, Sullivan Chamber)
The City Council will interrupt its summer break to hold a special meeting Sept. 5. The meeting's agenda will be limited to one topic: a proposed change to the zoning ordinance to make public libraries a permitted use in all zoning districts in the city. The reason for the special session: The deadline for the council to vote on the amendment is Sept. 5.
Discussion will be limited to the zoning amendment. There will be no discussion on proposals for the siting of the new main library, which now focuses on Central Square and the present site of the public library main branch on Broadway, in mid-Cambridge. Both sites now require zoning variances from the city's Board of Zoning Appeal. Six out of nine council votes are needed for adoption. The amendment would require only a special permit from the Planning Board for a new library; no variances would be necessary. [Text lifted from the Boston Globe City Weekly.]
